What you will learn:

You'll learn how the different server roles - application servers, database servers, DNS, and DHCP - interact to deliver services to end users. The course covers the role of operating systems and middleware and explains how storage technologies are selected to meet the data access and capacity needs of networked services. Disaster recovery is explored in depth as is how different RAID levels protect against disk failure.

 

By the end of this course you will be able to:

• describe the principles, types, and benefits of client-server operation.
• describe the role of, and relationship between, the various types of server involved in service delivery including application server, database server, and DNS and DHCP servers.
• describe the role and operation of, and facilities provided by, operating systems and middleware.
• describe and compare the various types of storage including DAS, NAS and SAN and their applications.
• describe various ways in which RAID technology can protect data stored on hard disk arrays.
• describe the purpose and development of a disaster recovery plan.
• define and explain the relevance of, recovery time objective (RTO), recovery point objective (RTO) and risk factor.
• describe the role and operation of load balancing, failover clustering and mirroring in improving the resilience of service delivery.
• explain the factors that determine the choice of an appropriate data backup strategy.

 

Course prerequisites:

A basic understanding of binary data, computer architecture, and local area networks. It is suggested that the PTT course "Ethernet networks" is studied before attempting this course.
