Target audience:
This course is designed for technicians and engineers involved in the design, commissioning and maintenance of synchronous transmission networks.
Course prerequisites:
An understanding of the basic principles of time division multiplexing and synchronous transmission. It is recommended that the PTT e-learning course "Synchronous transmission fundamentals" is studied before attempting this "SDH principles" course.
Course objectives:
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- describe the advantages of the SDH.
- describe the capabilites of SDH networks, their aggregate bit rates and payload capacities.
- describe the management facilities of an SDH network and the roles of the elements of a telecoms management network (TMN).
- describe the basic structure of an STM-1 frame.
- explain the concepts of pointers, containers, virtual containers and tributary units.
- describe the purpose, and details, of the multiplex section and regeneration section overheads.
- describe the purpose, and details, of path overheads.
- describe the structure of STM-n frames (n=4 to 64) and the purpose of their overheads.
- describe the role, applications and principles of explicit and virtual concatenation.
